BIO DATA OF DR. ASHIS  KUMAR MUKHOPADHYAY

Dr. Ashis Kumar Mukhopadhyay, M.Sc., Ph.D.,  Research Officer

Date of Birth : 11th July 1967 . Joined at NICED,Kolkata on  March 4, 2003.

Age : 39 Years.

His thesis research focused on population and molecular analyses of Vibrio cholerae, to gain insights into the interplay between environmental and human disease reservoirs,  and genetic factors that make certain lineages of this organism  highly virulent to humans. He worked as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of  Molecular Microbiology, Washington University School of Medicine,  Saint Louis, USA with Professor Douglas E. Berg for  5 years. He was awarded Young Scientist Scholarship for  International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria at Nagasaki,  Japan  in 1996. His thesis research and postdoctoral experience produced around 50  publications.

His  major present focus, however,  is on the  population and molecular genetic analyses and mechanism of drug resistance of Helicobacter pylori,  a microaerophilic bacterium  with the extraordinary ability to establish multi-decade long infections in human stomachs. It is a major cause of peptic ulcers and an early risk factor for gastric cancer, and a contributor to the risk of other food and water borne infections. He is  particularly interested  in the gynotypes of H.pylori strains of India, especially in the context of the emerging understanding of the H. pylori strains of India, especially in the context of the emerging understanding of  the H. pylori gene pools in other Asian and non – Asian  societies.
