Dr. Sujit Kumar Mondal, MBBS,DPH, M.Sc.(CHDC),MD Deputy Director

Date of Birth: 19th November,1947 Joined NICED,Kolkata on 2nd June, 1980. 

Age : 59 years.

Received training in Epidemiology & Stattistics from National Traning course in Epidemiology & Disease Control at N.I.C.D. Delhi,1982. Awarded Fellowship under Colombo Plan in London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine UK for 1 year during 1990-91. Received training in PC based statistical soft ware at Christian Medical College Velore in 1994, UNICEF-ICMR work shop on research methodology and epidemic preparedness at NICED. Calcutta 1995 Worked as Senior Research Fellow in Epidemiolology Division of NICED for 2 years during 1976-78, Medical Officer(Health) in Calcutta Port Trust during 1978-1979

Joined National Institute of Cholera & Enteric Diseases, Calcutta (ICMR) in 1980 as Research officer (Epidemiology) and since then involved in several community based epidemiological research projects like tramission of V. cholerae, V. parahaemolyticus, V. cholerae 0139. Intervention of diarrhoea by using simple narrow necked pitcher and by hand washing. Risk factors of persistent diarrhoea in young rural children. Operational research on 'Implementation of Oral Rehydration Therapy(ORT)& Home Available Fluid (HAF)' in rural community and feasibility of ORT Programme by 3 Tier strategy through health care delivery system. Community studies on invasive diarrhoea, Infant feeding practices and diarrhoea in rural infants. Behavioral study of mothers influencing diarrhoea of children through Vitamin A supplementation and Zinc to children and by health education to mothers.

Carried out epidemiological investigation of outbreaks of diarrhoealdiseases in defferent ststes of India to fiend out the extent, source and nature of infection, causative agent with suggestion of probable control measures. Conducted a number of morbidity, mortality and treatment practice survey of diarrhoeal diseases, Worked as a consultant in 'Calcutta Environmental Management strategy and Action Plan', a joint project of Govt of West Bangal & The British Govt. During 1995.

Attended more then six National conferences and presented scientific papers related to diarrhoeal diseases and public health. Worked as course Facilitator in WHO training courses on ORT implementation. Regularly delivers lecture on Epidemiology and control of diarrhoeal diseases to M.B.B.S., D.P.H. & M.D.(SPM) and also undergraduate students of Homeopathy colleges. Have 37 publications to the credit, which are published in reputed national and international journals.

His field of specialization is public health and he has been involved in investigation of several diarrhoea outbreaks and suggestion of probable control measures. He has published 36 papers and regularly teaches epidemiology and control of diarrhoeal diseases to under-graduate medical students. Dr. Mondal visited London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, UK for a year during 1990-91.
